Day 5. BIOKOVO

In the area of Biok, the human presence has a continuity from prehistory to later periods. Biokovo, especially the peripheral parts, was inhabited in prehistoric times, long before the appearance of writing. This is witnessed by numerous archaeological sites, which are confirmed by material remains. The earliest evidence of human presence in the Biokovo area dates back to the Paleolithic. This is the period when man chooses caves for his habitat, and makes weapons and tools from stone and bone. Later periods of civilization were characterized by the production of metal objects, and a novelty in that period were fortifications on the heights, hillforts, from which a wide land and sea space was monitored. People lived at the foot of them, and in case of danger, the population found shelter in them. The most typical is a series of fortifications placed along the prehistoric communication from Dubac towards the interior. Also, cemeteries, stone tumuli or piles appear in that age. The appearance of tumuli indicates the proximity of roads and their traffic importance. The most numerous groups of tumuli are on the outskirts of Biokovo, in the area of Gornji Brela, in the area of Staza and between Staza and Saranč. The coming age is the time of contact between the ethnically already formed Illyrian population and the Greeks and Romans. Already in the early Roman period, the settlements of the Biokovo area reached the level of civilization and culture of erecting sacred buildings. Churches were built on prominent peaks that dominated the area. Special attention should be paid to the issue of worshiping St. George on the highest peak in Biokovo. Church of St. Jure on the top of the same name was mentioned for the first time in 1640 in the travelogue of Fr. Pavle Pelizzer from Rovinj.
We can visit skywalk if there is a time on our way
